Even altho we’re in a culture of “super-sizing”, this is unquestionably not the approach you want to take when choosing a portable air conditioner. Though it may appear that larger is better, choosing an air conditioner that is too powerful for your room will in truth waste energy. On the other hand, choosing a unit that is too little for the area is likewise a waste because no matter how effective and highly-rated the portable AC is, it will be wholly ineffective.

For this reason, knowing what size AC your room needs is perfectly critical.

What you must know before purchasing a portable AC

There are some constituents to consider when purchasing a portable room air conditioner. Do you need it to be multi-functional (since a heap of units now pair as a heater, fan, and/or dehumidifier). Do you want it to have multiple modes?

Are there any special design constituents you’d like, such as LED display, remote control access, or possibly even a timer?

As you may see, portable air conditioners feature some choices. But the one choice that buyers tend to ignore is the unit’s listed BTU level. Since a lot of buyers get intimidated by abbreviations they don’t readily know, they make the fault of ignoring indispensable specifications that need to be taken into considerateness before purchasing a portable AC.

Let’s solve that problem right now. BTU merely stands for British Thermal Unit, which is not one thing more than a unit of energy. A BTU tells us what an ACs power and cooling capacity is, and the higher the BTU the more inviolable the AC.

Portable air conditioners ordinarily have a BTU of in regards to 5,000 to as high, with a heap of having as galore as 30,000 BTUs! And just as you undertake to keep other gimmicks in your home in proportionality to your needs, so ought to you do the same with your cooling unit. Now that you recognise a mobile AC with a 30,000 BTU is a highly powerful unit, you recognise such a unit is better suitable for a much larger room, say a huge iving room, rather than a very little bedroom.

What happens if I choose the faulty size AC?

Choosing the faulty size is not even so much when it comes to physical size, but regarding the BTU capacity of a portable AC unit. Now that you’re a whiz on BTUs, lets take a look at what happens when the faulty AC is chosen.

The AC size you’ll need depends on the size of the room you intend to cool. Choosing the faulty unit not only makes your air conditioner inefficient in cooling, it will likewise be inefficient in running. For example, if an air conditioner has a higher BTU rating than the room you intend for it to cool, the unit will cycle off too quickly and be unable to in the right manner remove the humidity from the air.

On the other hand, if the portable AC has a lower BTU rating than the required room size, the unit will not adequately cool the room.

How do I figure out which portable AC I need?

Measuring square footage: The original step to finding out what AC is right for you is by figuring out the square footage of the room(s) you need the most cooling for. Once you have that in mind, measure the square footage of that room. You may calculate the square footage by multiplying the length of the room by the width of the room. As an example, let’s pretend your room is 18 feet by 25 feet

Length x Width = 18′ x 25′ = 450 square feet

Matching square footage with the commended BTUs:

Refer to the chart under and find the commended BTUs for your square footage. To carry on with our example, lets pretend that your room is 450 square feet.

Room Size and BTU Recommendation Ratio

150 sq. ft. — up to 5,400 BTUs

200 sq. ft. — 6,000 BTUs

340 sq. ft. — 8,000 BTUs

400 sq. ft. — 9,000 BTUs

450 sq. ft. — 10,000 BTUs

550 sq. ft. — 12,000 BTUs

750 sq. ft. — 14,500 BTUs

850 sq. ft. — 16,000 BTUs

1,000 sq. ft. — 18,000 BTUs

1,400 sq. ft. — 24,000 BTUs

1,520 sq. ft. — 28,500 BTUs

1,600 sq. ft. — 32,000 BTUs

If you don’t think you’ll have a chart on hand when making your purchase, you may always get an estimate for your commended BTUs by multiplying the square footage by 35. Ideally, having a chart on hand is best. Just print out this page and keep it as a handy reference.

Factors to consider: Since this chart is designed for an intermediate room beneath intermediate conditions, it’s advisable to consider if there are any special conditions or needs your room has.

* Add 10% BTU if your room is a sunny area, on the second story or in an elevated setting.

* Reduce the BTU by 10% for shaded areas/rooms.

* Add 600 BTUs if your room will host more than 2 people.

* Add 4,000 BTUs if you will be using the portable AC to cool your kitchen.

Once you have taken these simple steps to figure out your cooling needs, you’re sure to make a much smarter investment in your comfort.

The NewAir portable AC definitely works. Lots of cold air comes pouring out of this thing, but it may not be exactly what you’re looking for. It’s good for some things and not so good for others. Let me explain.

I have an office/media room on the top floor of my house. It’s basically an attic/loft that gets pretty warm in the summer. Central air is pumped into the room, but not much air comes through the vents. My homeowner’s association will not allow window AC units, so I thought this would be an excellent alternative. The unit is portable and the window exhaust vent is not noticeable from the outside. The unit looks nice and is sturdy. I like the remote control and the digital thermostat on the front of the unit. It rolls nicely on it’s casters. Hooking up the hose and exhaust vent was easy. However, my expectations may have been too high.

First, the room is about 150-200 square feet. The unit is not able to cool the room down much at all. The room is tolerable if you’re sitting with the unit pointed in your direction as you can feel the cool air. That’s about as good as it got. Also, the hose and exhaust vent got really hot during operation. Not sure if the heat radiating out from it canceled out the AC, but it was noticeable. To the unit’s credit, the room has a skylight that acts just like a magnifying glass, so I’m sure some of the heat in the room is the result of it. Plus, there are three other windows with only blinds pulled. Maybe putting some opaque curtains up would help keep the temp down.

Second, the unit is very loud. Even on the low setting the compressor fills the room with a loud buzzing sound. If I’m working at my computer with headphones on, it’s not a problem. But if I’m trying to watch a movie or play video games on the TV it’s downright impossible.

Needless to say, I’m a little disappointed with the unit. I spent almost $400 on this thing and it doesn’t really work the way I wanted it to. There are a few tweeks I can make to the room to help it along, but I guess I’m just going to have to get used to it.

5Very nice AC for room cooling.
By Deborah
I have always used an evaporative cooler since I live in a low-humidity environment. It works really well unless it get over 96 and this year was especially warm so we decided to get an AC for the bedroom, the warmest room. I did lots of comparing, reviewing and trying to figure out exactly what would end up being the best value. I saw this product and it was something I hoped would work.

It came quickly. The company sends you the FedEx number so you can track it and know when to expect it. After opening it, I was glad we went portable instead of window unit. It looks pretty cool and isn’t too huge. The thing for the exhaust in the window looks good when viewed from outside the house. The air comes out very cool and gives instant relief. It isn’t loud. The remote is nice – I didn’t think we would use but we do. Not having to empty the water is a handy feature also.

I am really happy with this AC. :)

5Great AC unit !
By toobee
This 12,000 BTU unit works like a dream. It blows cold all day, is quiet, and given enough time, it actually cools most of my 1200 square foot house, which is far better than its rated cooling ability. Still, is is designed to be used as a room air conditioner. My only issue with it was the fact that the window kit wasn’t quite large enough for my largest windows in the living room. But all it took was a call to the manufacturer, Amcor, and for $7 plus postage they sent me a second window kit to extend the first one. The result is perfect, exactly what I needed. A hard-working AC unit that can be moved from place to place if I want… or even used in my studio outbuilding. Highly versatile and extremely well made. Would recommend to anyone who doesn’t have or want central air or window units. Finally, someone tagged this product as an evaporative cooler (swamp cooler) which it is NOT. It is a true air conditioner with a powerful compressor.
